The Development project for National Hydrographic Centre (NHC) started in 2001 and was fully completed on 15th October 2005. Prior to that date, the Hydrographic Branch as it was called then was, at the Ministry of Defence, Kuala Lumpur.

To be an entity of the Royal Malaysian Navy's pride and National and International focal point of contact on matters relating to hydrography, NHC moved to a new location at the newly commissioned Naval Base KD SULTAN ABDUL AZIZ SHAH, with world class infrastructure and facilities at Pulau Indah, Klang. It is here the vision of a credible hydrographic entity in this region is planned and worked towards.

NHC being the representative to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) for Malaysia is exclusively responsible for any information with interest to the safety of navigation at sea. This responsibility propels NHC forward audaciously with much exuberance while subscribing to the Navy's adage "WE MEAN TO WIN".
